We were so fortunate to have Rachel Baiman join us on fiddle and harmony vocals and Rachel Blumberg on drums for this one!
Buckbrush is a waist-high evergreen bush that grows high up in the mountains in Western Montana, in little pine forest clearings. The leaves are resinous and smell amazing- you get hints of it on the wind, especially in the heat of summer. Like with some species of pine trees, the seeds can only germinate with fire; they lie dormant in the ground waiting for a good long burn to rise and open. It’s a love song. MS

We got this song stuck in our heads some years ago. There is something about it that makes both of us shed some tears every time we hear it. Something so raw and to the point and vulnerable and everlasting, timeless. This is just the way it came out from both of us having a go at what we thought we could bring to the song. Martha brings all the vulnerability and passion that is apparent in the song. The piano playing is Martha as well, recorded at a friends house in Montana. I recorded my guitar and vocal in Portland one afternoon. It's continuing the theme of Last Stars First Light, a satisfying slow game of musical catch and release. Thank you Beyonce for releasing this song into the world.
